Systems / Project Engineer

Purpose:
The Systems Engineer performs detail design, assembly, programming, and testing of C3 (command, control and communications) and electrical systems of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), comprised of both high-altitude scientific balloons and small unmanned aircraft platforms and payloads. Conducts a variety of tests on electronic components, develops new systems, makes improvements to existing systems, and troubleshoots and solves technical problems. Apply engineering principals to develop and manage project plans, estimates, and schedules.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and organize technical projects from conception to completion
  • Utilize engineering knowledge for project management; estimate timelines and schedules; anticipate risks and costs related to the technical aspects of the project
  • Functions as the primary technical contact point, both internal and external, within a specified project
  • Design and integrate C3, video, tracking, and termination systems for UAS carrying customer payloads
  • Ensure EMI control by positioning of systems, antennas, and wiring to mitigate RF conflicts
  • Prepare engineering drawings for avionics and electrical system interface wiring using computer based drafting tools
  • Utilize electronic test equipment to verify avionics and electrical systems meet design requirements
  • Integrate and troubleshoot satellite communication systems, power systems, and data acquisition systems
  • Oversee the manufacturing of subsystem cables and hardware
  • Occasional short term travel to support flight operations

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering discipline. Concentration in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
  • 3-4 years of professional experience
  • 3-5 years project management experience is required
  • Excellent skills with electronic circuit design and troubleshooting
  • Component integration and harness design experience required

This position requires access to or use of information which is subject to the federal International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Preferred Skills:

  • Electrical engineer with a broad background in EE field that relates to systems integration, engineering and test
  • Experience with telemetry systems including line of sight and satellite communications
  • RF design experience
  • EMI control, RF and system level testing experience
  • Ham Radio License
  • RC or UAS Pilot experience

Important Skills:

  • Design knowledge of UAS electrical systems, components, and materials
  • In-depth knowledge of UAS flight management systems including the Piccolo family of autopilots
  • Design knowledge of electronic and communications systems, components, and materials
  • Proficient electronic assembly skills including soldering and handling of sensitive electronic components
  • Electronic trouble-shooting ability and knowledge of electronic component testing
  • Adept at creating intuitive solutions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite including; word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and web enabled applications
  • Presents information effectively and persuasively across communication settings
  • An excellent attitude; ability to work independently; high attention to detail
  • Is flexible and can adjust to shifting priorities
  • Manages time effectively and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines
  • Capable of functioning as the primary or secondary telemetry operator for flight operations
