Avionics Technician – UAS

The Avionics Technician assembles and tests electronic components of ground support systems and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), comprised of both high-altitude scientific balloons and small unmanned aircraft.Ā  As a member of the Flight Operations Team, the Avionics Technician will assist in launch, tracking, monitoring, and recovery of UAS.Ā  Additionally, the Avionics Technician works directly with customers and engineering staff to develop flight trains and integrate, improve, troubleshoot, and correct flight systems and payloads.

Essential Functions:

  • Fabricate/assemble Electronic Line Replaceable Units (LRUā€™s), Ā assist in integration and rigging of flight trains
  • Tests and repair flown LRUā€™s returning them to flight status or remove from inventory, as applicable
  • Operate and maintain pyrotechnic devices
  • Assemble, test, and operate C3 (communications, command, and control), telemetry, and data acquisition systems
  • Support tracking and recovery of balloon envelopes and payloads
  • Interpret flight test data to diagnose malfunctions and systemic performance problems
  • Operate and maintain flight and ground stations and support equipment
  • Frequent short term travel to remote locations to establish and sustain field operations within CONUS and Hawaii
  • May spend extended periods in the field under strenuous conditions
  • Interface with engineers, technicians, and customers

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Electronics or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Working knowledge of UAS powerplant, flight control, and autopilot systems (such as Piccolo)
  • Ability to interpret schematics, blueprints, and diagrams
  • Perform strenuous physical activities, such as recurrent walking, bending, climbing, and heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Private pilotā€™s license, instrument rating, and current class II FAA medical, preferred
  • This position requires access to or use of information which is subject to the federal International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants for this position must be U.S. Persons within the meaning of ITAR and EAR. ITAR and EAR define ā€œU.S. Personā€ as Any individual who is a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident alien of the United States, or a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
