Aerospace Flight Test Engineer

Purpose:
The Aerospace Flight Test Engineer is responsible for defining, planning, organizing, executing, and reporting complex flight programs and flight test events of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), comprised of both high-altitude scientific balloons and small unmanned aircraft. A multi-disciplinary position with emphasis on aeronautics, avionics, flight systems certification, regulation, and testing.

Essential Functions:

  • Derive and track flight test requirements
  • Perform system level qualification, verification and validation activities to support testing of UAS hardware and software
  • Generate system level test plans and procedures, and support or conduct UAS ground and flight testing
  • Confer with scientific, engineering, and technical personnel to resolve testing problems including but not limited to product or system malfunctions, incomplete test data, and differences in test data interpretation.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and /or tasks is consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Coordinate technical issues with customers associated with flight test activities
  • Lead internal design activities and technical decisions
  • Manage and control the engineering effort including the hours assigned to the project
  • Variety of work environments; desk and hands-on in the flight hangar, flight line and field operations
  • Occasional short term travel to support flight operations limited to the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline. Concentration in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering is a plus. Strong
    Aeronautics, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science skills desirable.
  • Minimum 3 years of operational or developmental UAS flight test experience is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering disciplines associated with an unmanned systems flight test program to include requirements definition, design reviews and documentation, and systems integration.
  • Familiarity with FAA regulations, Certificate of Authorization or Waiver (COA) process and aircraft certification procedures.
  • Understanding of command, control, telemetry, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience with autopilot systems.
  • This position requires access to or use of information which is subject to the federal International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
